Arranca a temporada de prémios com a divulgação dos nomeados dos Independent Spirit Awards. A Film Independent anunciou que Moonlight e American Honey arrecadaram 6 indicações, estando na frente da corrida.
Desde 1984 que os Independent Spirit Awards são atribuídos, numa cerimónia realizada no dia anterior
ao dos Óscares. Nos últimos anos, as escolhas foram certeiras quanto às obras que viriam a vencer o Óscar de Melhor Filme: 12 Anos Escravo (2013, crítica aqui), Birdman (2014, crítica aqui) e O Caso Spotlight (2015, crítica aqui).
